apidae candles ⎮ My Beeswax Discovery

Amy at apidae candles

Hi, I'm Amy!

I am originally from Michigan, USA, but have happily lived in Germany since 1997. Since 2013, I have been making beeswax candles in Konstanz on Lake Constance.

A Journey in Beeswax

apidae candles has existed since 2013. It all began with the search for a scented candle. I wanted this candle to have a beautiful container that I could reuse, be non-toxic, and have a subtle, not overpowering scent. Most candles available on the market are made of paraffin, a by-product of crude oil processing. Paraffin contains toxins and is then bleached with chemicals to lighten the color. Synthetic fragrances are often added. These toxins are released into the air when burned. I knew I didn’t want that!

Soy wax is considered a natural alternative to paraffin but its production has led to deforestation and monoculture farming.

On the contrary, pure beeswax is a natural and renewable resource. In addition, the bees provide a subtle scent of honey to the beeswax. I also wanted the candle to have a modern touch. I began by pouring beeswax into the classic German Weck jars I had collected in my basement. And that's how apidae candles came to be - your natural alternative to scented candles.

Crafted by Hand, Inspired by Nature

At apidae candles, each step of the candle-making process is a labor of love, meticulously carried out by hand. From pouring the precious beeswax into beautiful vessels to the recyclable packaging, every candle is a testament to craftsmanship and attention to detail. My candles are made of 100% beeswax and a cotton wick. Nothing else. The bees give the wax its delicate honey scent and warm golden color. Bring the soothing glow of nature into your home with a beeswax candle from apidae candles.

What does apidae mean?

I often get asked what apidae means. Apidae is the name of the scientific family of bees, including honey bees.
